Toyota bringing advanced ITS technology to mass-market models

By the end of 2015, Toyota will make a new intelligent transportation system (ITS) safety package available on three models in Japan. The package, named ITS Connect, uses Japan's standardised ITS frequency of 760 MHz to receive and share data transmitted by external infrastructure and other vehicles. By the end of 2015, 1686 Toyota will make a new intelligent transportation system (ITS) safety package available on three models in Japan. The package, named ITS Connect, uses Japan's standardised ITS frequency of 760 MHz to receive and share data transmitted by external infrastructure and other vehicles.

ITS Connect uses vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication to provide drivers with the kind of safety information that cannot be picked up by onboard sensors. This includes traffic signal information and information about the presence of vehicles and pedestrians in blind spots, such as right turn collision caution, red light caution and signal change advisory. V2V communications include communicating radar cruise control and emergency vehicle notification.

Ton Brand describes the GSM Association's Embedded mTelematics programme. As the world's roads become increasingly crowded, consumers and businesses are demanding better real-time information to help them both avoid traffic congestion and make smarter use of public transport. Embedding mobile connectivity directly into vehicles can enable drivers and passengers to see live traffic flows in their localities, as well as the expected arrival time of the next bus, ferry or tram

    March 28, 2018
Wrong-way driving (WWD) is a remarkably innocuous term for incidents that all too often cause some of the worst accidents that emergency services have to deal with. Several US states are now taking steps to minimise the problem, as Alan Dron finds out. You’re driving down a highway at night when you see approaching headlights. You initially assume they are merely those of an oncoming car on the opposite carriageway. It’s only when they are within 200 yards or so that you realise that the other driver is in
