The 6174 Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) has engaged 8285 Arcadis US to provide technical support services and facilitate planning activities related to connected and autonomous vehicles and their impact on highway infrastructure to prepare for the future of transportation.

The multi-year US$2 million contract includes developing the strategic implementation plan for connected and autonomous vehicle implementation and performing intelligent transportation systems architectures and system engineering analysis for connected and autonomous vehicles. The contract also covers providing similar services for transportation data mining and dissemination, electronic toll collection (ETC) systems, advanced traveller information systems and advanced transportation management systems.

As part of the project, Arcadis will analyse emerging technologies in roadway infrastructure, such as connected cars and vehicle to infrastructure and vehicle to vehicle technology.

New systems of software are coming together to form the technological backbone of a project that will apply practically to one corridor in Dallas, but influence travel across a wider area. Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) is the lead agency for an extensive Integrated Corridor Management (ICM) project in Dallas, covering an area stretching north east of downtown Dallas, 20 miles long by two miles wide. The corridor is defined loosely by the US-75 freeway and DART’s light rail ‘red line’. These are the theor

Guidance on the likely impact of multipath communications on connected vehicle development has been published by ITS America. ITS America’s Connected Vehicle Technical Insight looks at the challenges and opportunities wireless interoperability could provide in vehicle applications. In particular the 22-page document examines the processes by which data can be transferred from one vehicle to another (V2V), or between a vehicle and the infrastructure (V2I).

Tammy Meehan and Thomas Hedblom of 3M consider the ongoing development of technology needed to introduce connected and autonomous vehicles. The transportation industry is in the midst of the most dramatic shift since Henry Ford introduced horseless carriages. Already we are seeing the increased use of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) which, along with the introduction of autonomous vehicles in the next few decades, will bring profound changes to vehicles and the environment in which they operate.
