4291 Transperth, a division of the 4290 Public Transport Authority of Western Australia (PTA), has announced it will conduct a 12-month trial, starting early in 2012, of a system to allow their contracted bus operators to better manage and deliver services. The trial, using technology supplied by Vix, will involve real-time vehicle tracking and management some 80 buses operating out of Perth’s Karrinyup depot.

The pilot is part of a significant redevelopment project in the Perth Central Business District (CBD) which is aimed at improving linkages and reconnecting the city centre with Northbridge, one of Perth's major cultural and entertainment precincts. The aim is to remove the existing physical barrier created by the ‘at grade’ Fremantle Train Line and replace it with a below ground rail line. A key component of the public transport works includes the construction of a new underground bus station that will both significantly reduce the facility's footprint and maximise the number of available bus stands, passenger amenities and terminal efficiency. Real-time vehicle tracking and management on the bus network is critical to the new bus station's successful operation, and will provide effective station traffic control and dynamic stand allocation functions.

Buses services benefit from seamless Wi-Fi data transfer
Ted Bowser explains how the almost total Wi-Fi coverage at Ride-On’s new bus garage is providing big benefits for the operator and passengers alike. The ability to download and upload data to and from the various systems on board buses has become central to mass transit operators’ business model. So when Ride-On, the public transportation system in Maryland’s Montgomery County, was moving one of its three depots into a bigger and purpose-built facility, connectivity was a key consideration.
