Efkon Asia, the Kuala Lumpur-based subsidiary of 43 Efkon AG, Austria, has received an additional order for 250,000 mult-lane free flow On Board Units (two piece OBU with integrated contactless Mifare Smart Card) based on high speed bi-directional active ISO CALM compatible Infrared. The order was received from IRAT (Infrared Advanced Technology) a member of the United Engineers Malaysia Group.

Efkon introduced its infrared technology to Malaysia in 1999 and has replaced all earlier ETC systems, primarily microwave systems based, nationwide in 2004.

The SmartTag System is based on Efkon's infrared electronic toll collection system and is designed to operate in a multi-lane free flow environment, but can be used in single lane high speed free flow with barrier applications, as operated in Malaysia. According to the company, it is therefore quite easy to extend to the multi-lane free flow mode by adding the enforcement and classification system to it.
