Germany eyes national car tolls

Germany's conservative CSU party has said that it will issue a draft bill on a new road toll for cars in autumn 2011. It says that even if car taxes were lowered, extending the national tolling system from trucks to cars, would raise billions of euros over the next few years. However, Chancellor Angela Merkel is on record as saying that no tolls for cars will be introduced during the current legislative period.

It says that even if car taxes were lowered, extending the national tolling system from trucks to cars,  would raise billions of euros over the next few years. However, Chancellor Angela Merkel is on record as saying that no tolls for cars will be introduced during the current legislative period.

Meanwhile, in 2010 Germany raised US$6.4 billion via truck tolls, according to the German cargo transport office BAG. Foreign trucks accounted for 37 per cent of this amount. Euro V trucks contributed 51 per cent and Euro III trucks for only 32 per cent.

    Deaths up and road safety spending down in England
    Fifty local councils in England saw more than a ten per cent increase in killed and seriously injured (KSI) crash rates between 2010 and 2011, according to an Institute for Advanced Motorists (IAM) analysis of the new road accident figures. The biggest increases in KSI numbers were in St Helens – 62 per cent, Portsmouth – 57 per cent, Stoke on Trent – 57 per cent, and Coventry – 51 per cent.     Bulgaria to implement truck tolling system
    The Bulgarian government is considering inviting investors to help it develop an electronic system for truck tolls. The project, which is worth up to US$648.26 million, will be developed on a public-private partnership (PPP) basis.
