Germany eyes national car tolls

Germany's conservative CSU party has said that it will issue a draft bill on a new road toll for cars in autumn 2011. It says that even if car taxes were lowered, extending the national tolling system from trucks to cars, would raise billions of euros over the next few years. However, Chancellor Angela Merkel is on record as saying that no tolls for cars will be introduced during the current legislative period.

It says that even if car taxes were lowered, extending the national tolling system from trucks to cars,  would raise billions of euros over the next few years. However, Chancellor Angela Merkel is on record as saying that no tolls for cars will be introduced during the current legislative period.

Meanwhile, in 2010 Germany raised US$6.4 billion via truck tolls, according to the German cargo transport office BAG. Foreign trucks accounted for 37 per cent of this amount. Euro V trucks contributed 51 per cent and Euro III trucks for only 32 per cent.

  • Record-breaking year for US toll facilities, says IBTTA

    Last year (2015) was a record-breaking year for toll road, bridge and tunnel usage according to a new report from the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association (IBTTA).   • Electric vehicle future for Norway

    Innovative fast-charging systems for electric vehicles are now being supplied to Norway. The country is buying the high speed charging technology from Epyon, a Belgian supplier. Norwegian firm Lysi Energi is purchasing the commercial charging stations for electric vehicles in a bid to build a nationwide network. Epyon recently installed a Terra 51 Charge Station in Sandnes, near the E39 highway to Stavanger, and plans installations at least at two more locations in the next two months.
