International Road Dynamics (IRD) has been awarded two contracts totalling CAN$1.2 million for Weigh in Motion (WiM) system upgrades for the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority (Illinois Tollway).

The project includes the removal of existing WiM Systems on I-94 and I-355, installation of new virtual WiM (VWiM) sites comprising WiM sensors, iSinc WiM controllers, cameras, over-height detection sensors, and tyre anomaly and classification systems (Tacs).

The WiM sensors will be used to screen for overweight vehicles and the Tacs systems will identify vehicles that are unsafe due to flat, missing, mismatched or underinflated tyres.

The Tacs system will be integrated with IRD's virtual weigh station (VWS) to display the locations of tyre anomalies while the VWS itself provides accessibility to real-time data including camera images, vehicle records and user reports.

Rish Malhotra, IRD president and CEO, said: "These future-focused systems unlock new value, anticipating our customers’ current planning needs as well as ensuring that the data from our systems will provide new insights well beyond the immediate commercial vehicle enforcement requirements.”

Raising allowable truck weight limits improve transport efficiency but leaves an ever-increasing number of bridges vulnerable to being overloaded and damaged by vehicles heavier, and in some cases far heavier, than they were designed to carry. The simplistic solution is to impose weight restrictions and erect appropriate signs - but this could have severe knock-on effect on trucking operations

Quarterhill subsidiary International Road Dynamics (IRD) has been awarded a contract valued at US$1.6 million (CA$1.95 million) to supply four commercial vehicle pre screening stations for the Regina, Saskatchewan Bypass project in Canada. The stations will be used by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure to monitor and screen commercial vehicles based on weights and dimensions. Under the contract, IRD will supply and install an integrated system using its bending plate weigh in motion
