ITS International launches MaaS Market Conference

ITS International is to host its first conference for national and city authorities interested in the benefits and implementation of Mobility as a Service (MaaS).

There is no doubt that Mobility as a Service (MaaS) will be a major disrupter and the next mega-trend in urban and inter-urban transport. Why? Because it is more convenient and cheaper for the individual traveller. What’s more, as it facilitates inter-modal travel and operations can start to be rolled-out without any additional infrastructure, MaaS can benefit every city authority.

While the concept may be simple, implementing and facilitating the MaaS revolution and the ramifications of doing so, are less well understood. To answer these questions, and many more, ITS International will be hosting a two-day MaaS Market Conference in London on 22 and 23 March 2017.

Taking the theme, Concept to Delivery, the conference is designed to disseminate practical knowledge and examples of good practice from legislators, transport authorities and practitioners around the world enabling other transport authorities and providers understand, embrace, facilitate and implement MaaS.

Sampo Hietanen, the ‘Father’ of MaaS will open the event. He will explain the MaaS concept, the driving forces that will see widespread adoption and why it will have such a profound effect on the organisation and use of transport in and between towns and cities.

Other sessions will examine the implications for both authorities and transit operators and will explore the legislative and technical obstacles to adoption. Also to be considered will be the question of whether MaaS should be provided by local authorities or by the private sector.

After the end of the first day’s proceedings there will be the opportunity to network with other delegates and visit the exhibitor stands during an informal drinks and canapes evening. 

A second day will allow delegates and presenters to explore the financial implications and requirements for both authorities and transit operators as well as the benefits MaaS can bring in terms of the environment and services for young, old and disabled travellers. Case studies of early MaaS adopters and pilot schemes from around the world will also be presented and the conference will close with a round table debate on the theme of ‘Where to Now?’

While the full list of speakers is still being finalised, those already confirmed include Finnish Transport Minister, Anne Berner, who will share her experiences of enabling MaaS in her homeland. Lucy Yu, the UK DfT head of innovation and mobility as a service, will consider what implementing MaaS will mean for vertical transport organisations. On the business front, Frost & Sullivan’s Martyn Briggs will provide insight into the size of the MaaS market, potential winners and losers and the effect on purchasing travel.

The MaaS Market conference will take place in the City of London at the world headquarters of Inmarsat, the publically-listed satellite operator. Not only is the location adjacent to Old Street Station on London’s Underground, it is only 30 minutes from London City Airport. And with ITS International’s global readership in mind, the first paper is at 11am (coffee from 10am) on the first day to allow international delegates travel time to reach the venue. The second day starts at 9am, with the last session scheduled to end at 15.30 to enable delegates to make their return journey in comfort.
